HABITAT FOR HUMANITY ENCOURAGES LOCAL SKILLED CONSTRUCTION WORKERS TO REGISTER FOR CREW LEADER TRAINING5/5/2010 Training Prepares Individuals to Guide Volunteers on Habitat Build Sites Los Angeles, CA – May 5, 2010: Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) is seeking skilled construction workers, retirees and individuals from local construction labor unions to register for its affordable Crew Leader Training program. The program runs from June 8th through July 21st and takes place every Tuesday and Wednesday night from 6-9 pm at the Housing Center located at in Carson, California. The program is led by HFH GLA’s Training Coordinator and experienced volunteers, who prepare students to lead teams of unskilled volunteers on HFH GLA construction sites. In addition to honing leadership skills, students will also practice teaching others the correct use of hand and power tools, framing, roofing, window and door installation, siding, drywall, painting and installing case and base. There is a course fee of $50.00, $25.00 of which is refunded after successfully completing the program. “Crew Leaders are essential to the work we do building homes in partnership with volunteers and hard-working families in Los Angeles,” says Erin Rank, President and CEO of HFH GLA. “It is their experience and leadership that ensures the quality of our homes. It is also their mentoring and enthusiasm that keeps first-time volunteers coming back.”
The program is open to individuals with extensive construction skills interested in using those skills to serve deserving families in Los Angeles. Participants will need to pass a construction skills test to qualify for the training and must commit to attending 10 of the 14 sessions, including the first two, which are mandatory. HFH GLA also asks that graduates of the program volunteer as a Crew Leader for at least six days in the coming year.
